Not guilty plea from woman accused of slitting dog's throat

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- A Haleiwa woman charged with killing her dog has pled not guilty
to animal cruelty.

Andrea Fiegle allegedly used a kitchen knife to cut the dog's
throat after losing her temper last month. She then called police and told them about the incident.

The 36-year-old is free on $11,000 bail. Her trial is set for July.

Police investigate suspicious death of homeless man found in Oahu cave

NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- CrimeStoppers and the Honolulu Police Department are asking for the public's help with a homicide investigation.

The body of Dennis J. Nolan, a 44-year-old homeless man, was discovered at approximately 6:10 p.m. on May 3. Police say Nolan's body was found inside a cave in Pupukea where he was living.

An autopsy revealed his cause of death was a homicide, and police are now asking for witnesses or anyone with information regarding this suspicious death to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300, or *CRIME on a mobile device.

Lockdown lifted in Kahuku after police investigate suspicious package

KAHUKU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- UPDATE at 11:09 a.m.:
The lockdown at several Kahuku schools has been lifted after an all clear was given by police, according to the state Department of Education. 

The Department of Education's tweet reads "Police have given the "all clear" relating to a suspicious package in a Kahuku park. Lockdown is lifted at Kahuku schools. #HInews"

We will have more information on this developing story as soon as it is available.

Kahuku schools have been locked down while police investigate the discovery of a possible improvised explosive device at a nearby park, according to Board of Education and Honolulu Police Department officials.

San Diego newspaper cartoon on Manti draws local critics

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- An editorial cartoon depicting football star Manti Te'o on the beach with his arm around an imaginary girlfriend appeared in Tuesday's editions of a newspaper in San Diego, where Te'o was drafted last week to play for the Chargers in the NFL.

The cartoon by Steve Breen is an obvious reference to a hoax in which a man admitted to making up Te'o's online girlfriend. It depicts Te'o walking on the beach wearing a Chargers' t-shirt, shorts and slippers as the sun sets in the distance. His right arm is extended, as he says, "Honey, I think we're going to love living in San Diego."

"That's not a nice welcome at all," said Kaili Honbo in Waikiki after being shown the cartoon. "It is mocking. And it's a bad representation of somebody from Hawaii."

Haleiwa woman arrested for allegedly killing dog

HALEIWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- A Haleiwa woman faces a charge of first-degree cruelty to animals after she allegedly used what was described as a "dangerous instrument" to discipline her dog.

Investigators said the woman called police after the dog died from its injuries.

The incident happened at about 6 p.m. Sunday in a quiet Haleiwa neighborhood on Paalaa Road. Neighbors said they didn't hear any unusual noises from the house at the time.

"I don't know who said what, but we didn't hear anything, because my bedroom is right here, and I'm home all day," said neighbor Debbie Ige.

Ige and several other neighbors said that Fiegel was quiet and kept to herself. "But I see her," said Ige. "She walks her dogs to the mailbox. And she's quiet. And I don't think she would do that."

Even without Manti, hundreds show up for celebration

LAIE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Fans showed up for a huge celebration on Oahu's North Shore Saturday -- even though Manti Te'o was missing.

The celebration began with a parade that started in Hauula and snaked its way to Kahuku before doubling back to Laie for a community party. The event was planned before Te'o was picked by the San Diego Chargers in the NFL draft. He had to fly out to California Friday night to appear in a Saturday news conference with his new team.

"Our job was to bring the package," said Manti's father, Brian Te'o. "And the package was taken from us at the last minute, so I came empty-handed, so I hope they'll forgive me for that."

"We're just excited supporting him," said Laie resident Summer Kester, who watched the parade with her family. "It's awesome. It's a small town, and so it's fun to feel the excitement with him."

Manti Te'o's parade will go on without him

LAIE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- A "welcome home" parade for Manti Te'o will go on as scheduled Saturday, even though the Norte Dame football star won't be there to see it.

Te'o was chosen Friday in the second round of the NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers, who scheduled a press conference with him, in San Diego, Saturday morning. Te'o was scheduled to leave Honolulu for California Friday night.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced earlier in the week that the city was co-sponsoring a parade for Te'o and fellow Norte Dame player Robby Toma. The city gave a $2,000 grant for the parade; the rest of the cost is being handled by the Koolauloa Community, especially the residents of Laie and Kahuku.

They've done their work. The food's been cooked and prepared, the tents have been set up and the money's been donated, so the parade and party are going ahead.
