Manti Te'o's parade will go on without him

LAIE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- A "welcome home" parade for Manti Te'o will go on as scheduled Saturday, even though the Norte Dame football star won't be there to see it.

Te'o was chosen Friday in the second round of the NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers, who scheduled a press conference with him, in San Diego, Saturday morning. Te'o was scheduled to leave Honolulu for California Friday night.

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced earlier in the week that the city was co-sponsoring a parade for Te'o and fellow Norte Dame player Robby Toma. The city gave a $2,000 grant for the parade; the rest of the cost is being handled by the Koolauloa Community, especially the residents of Laie and Kahuku.

They've done their work. The food's been cooked and prepared, the tents have been set up and the money's been donated, so the parade and party are going ahead.

Oahu's 'Country' Medical Center providing North Shore residents and visitors with quality care

For a health care facility to be located in a somewhat remote and rural location there can be a number of challenges. But, Kahuku Medical Center (KMC) is excited to mark its fifth year as the Critical Access Hospital dedicated to serve the busy North Shore and Ko’olauloa community residents and tourists to provide excellent quality care.

KMC is situated on seven acres in Kahuku owned by Continental Pacific, LLC. KMC's lease, negotiated with Campbell Estate who first owned the property, runs until 2049. The lease is independent of land ownership.

“Since becoming a non-profit affiliate of HHSC in 2008, KMC continues to play an integral part of health care delivery in the North Shore communities of Oahu,” said Avery Chumbley, HHSC Corporate Board Chair.  “The access patients have to personalized care is significant and we are proud to see the positive impact KMC has had, and will continue to have, on the community.”

Dead whale calf washes up on Oahu's North Shore

KAHUKU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- A dead whale calf washed up on Oahu's North Shore Tuesday.

Officials from the Department of Land and Natural Resources say the carcass of the humpback whale calf washed ashore at Kahuku point.

The calf was 13 to 15 ft. long, between 2,500 to 3,000 lbs. and estimated to be about two to six weeks old.

Federal, State and County agencies worked together to remove the carcass by towing it four miles out to sea and releasing it. The carcass was inaccessible by heavy equipment because it was located on a rocky shoreline.

Sharks feeding on the carcass made it unsafe to tow to a nearby harbor for retrieval for necropsy studies.

A fisherman reported the whale at about 6:30 a.m.

This is the fifth dead whale calf to wash ashore in Hawaii this year.
